AboutÂ
My journey as a high-functioning autistic individual has been a path to self-acceptance, understanding, and ultimately, the pursuit of my passion: art.

Nellie van der Walt
Through my art, I can truly be myself, unrestricted by societal expectations.
Hello, I’m Nellie van der Walt, and I want to begin by saying that my autism is not something I carry; it’s who I am. I’ve always been and will forever be authentically me, regardless of societal expectations. My journey as a high-functioning autistic individual has been a path to self-acceptance, understanding, and ultimately, the pursuit of my passion: art.
For three decades, I attempted to fit the mold of what society deemed “normal.” It was a source of immense anxiety and unhappiness. Anxiety, I’ve learned, can be disabling. It reached a point where I could no longer work within the confines of that “normal.”
In 2021, I decided to take a leap of faith and embrace my lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist. Through my art, I’ve found a sanctuary where I can express my unique perspective, a haven where there are no rules, no right or wrong. It’s a space where I can be authentically myself, free from the struggle of interpreting and fitting into a neurotypical society.
What I Experience:
Art, for me, is a profound means of self-expression and self-soothing. It’s a form of stimming, a repetitive action that allows me to find tranquility in the rhythm of my own creations. With art, my very busy mind finds solace in translating its thoughts onto paper.
What You Experience:
Art is a deeply personal experience, and I don’t presume to dictate what you should think or feel when you view my work. We are unique beings with our own interpretations. However, I hope that when you engage with my art, you might connect with the emotions I portray, with love being the most prominent.
If my art resonates with you in any way, it’s a profound and beautiful connection we share.
Career Background:
My journey has been shaped by my background in Graphic Design and Communication, which later led me to a career in Digital Marketing and Brand Identity, primarily within the South African wine industry. In 2021, I embraced a new chapter in my life by pursuing art full-time.
My preferred mediums are watercolor and ink on paper, using a hatch technique to add intricate details to my drawings. My style was influenced by artists like Conrad Botes and Vincent van Gogh, who create intricate patterns with their chosen medium.
I’ve been fortunate to showcase my work in various group exhibitions since 2005, and I’m eagerly anticipating my first Solo Exhibition in 2022. Currently, you can find my work displayed at Stone Fish Gallery (Paternoster), Gerber & Co (Simondium), Yours & Mine (Paarl), and Marze Botha Art Gallery (Stellenbosch).
If you’d like to know more about me or my art, please feel free to get in touch. Your curiosity and support mean the world to me.
Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey.
